A message from Archbishop Gomez to our community of faith regarding the settlement
BackAs you may be aware, as part of our commitment to survivor-victims of sexual abuse, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has been in active mediation since 2023 to address civil litigation involving claims for sexual abuse of minors filed after the enactment of California Assembly Bill 218 (AB 218) that provided a three-year window for the revival of claims that were time-barred under the statute of limitations. The window opened January 1, 2020 and closed December 31, 2022.
The Archdiocese and the Plaintiffs’ Liaison Committee involved in the mediation process have announced an agreement in principle for an $880 million settlement of nearly all of the remaining claims against the Archdiocese in the AB 218 coordinated proceedings.
The Archdiocese has created a web portal which includes the letter from Archbishop Gomez which I will be reading momentarily as well as other important information regarding the settlement and the Archdiocese’s abuse prevention efforts which can be found at LAB218. Please visit the Archdiocesan website to access this portal with more information about the settlement and the sexual abuse prevention policies and programs of the Archdiocese.
